Enjoy 40% off!

Hello Bear Patch Friends!
Christmas Day is past, wrapping paper has overfilled the garbage can and pine needles are dropping as you read this!  Dinners have been made and consumed, and diets have resumed!  We hope at least one of your own gifts included something for your quilting and sewing projects!

There were no gift certificates from Bear Patch in your stocking this year, but we do want to remind you that any past gift certificates must be spent soon in the store.  After the store closes, any remaining dollars on gift certificates will be voided.

Please be aware we are closed on Wednesday, December 26.  We are open for the after-holiday shopping from December 27 through the 31st.  Your discount moves to 40% off nearly everything!  The only thing you might find in short supply is solid black and white, since that's like stocking up on water and peanut butter before a big storm, just blink and it's gone!  Who can't use some spare black and white in the stash?!

As we continue in this process of closing down, you can see some changes around the store.  We are all feeling various shades of joy and sadness.  And still finding some very interesting things to pull out of the nooks and crannies!  You have a chance to own a bit of Bear Patch history for cheap if you shop our "garage sale" table in the back corner!  And, by the way, there is no dickering and no further discounts on those items!

One big change for Bernina is that we will actually close the dealership.  The plans we had hoped for have changed.  We do have a few machines left to sell with good incentives on the prices.  Any machines in the repair department are being completed and will need to be picked up as soon as you are notified.  We are recommending that Bernina owners contact Jordan for service and repair through his own phone number, which we can give to you on request.  We are still running some classes in January for new owners, since there are people still needing that and we want to carry through with as much as we can.  And for future help and assistance, please check out Quilter's Haven in Rosemount.  They are an established Bernina dealership.

We don't have any definite news to share about what might possibly follow Bear Patch in our space.  Whatever happens, please remember that we need to support our small businesses of all kinds.  Downtown White Bear Lake has so much to offer and things you just won't find anywhere else, and we are proud to have been a part of that.

We are no longer accepting donation blankets and quilts for Project Linus.  You can learn more about drop off locations at the website for the Greater Twin Cities chapter.

We are closed January 1-2-3.  That will give you plenty of time to begin to work on your resolutions for 2019!  If you're not a big football fan, please join us in thought as we spend January 1 barricaded in our sewing space!  It's a great day for the sisterhood of sewing!

Storewide discount moves to 30% and the Bernina discounts are amazing!

Effective Wednesday, December 5,
our storewide discount moves to 30%!
The same rules apply as before, if you click this link you will get the full information.  We are still cutting lots of fabric and people are coming in prepared with measurements and colors to get big chunks for backings.  I keep discovering new fabric that catches my eye, like this one--
This is a panel print, it's about 40" square, and would make a wonderfully
creative piece of wall art on stretcher bars.  It really makes a statement!

All of our notions, rulers, books and patterns are also discounted 30%.
We just restocked these cute these cute Stash and Store items
that have been selling out and would make a great little Christmas gift idea.
Bernina floor models are still available to purchase at prices aimed to make you smile!  The elf on the shelf thinks you have been a very good girl or boy and should have a new machine under the tree!  First, we have "demo" machines which have been lightly used in the store, but almost like new!  All are discounted individually and our staff will show you how they work and answer any questions you might have.  If you would like to call ahead, the number is 651-429-6500 or visit the Bernina website.
B880 Plus, B790 Plus-AE, B770 (x2), B700, B500, Bernette Sew and Go, Bernette Chicago 7 and the Bernette B35
Sergers:  L450 (x2) and L460

In addition to the demo models, we have some new-in-the-box machines:  a 740 and a 770 SE, Bernette B38, Bernette Sew and Go, Bernette B35.  And new sergers:  L450 (x3) and L460 (x2)
These brand new machines are greatly discounted, but not quite as much as the demo models.

Also, in the Bernina department, we still have an ample supply of machine embroidery patterns and CD's.  Thread and stabilizers have been re-stocked as well.  These are all 30% off.

Another special opportunity is available to you for a limited time.
If you have ever been in the store, you undoubtedly noticed the class tables and cutting tables up in the front.  The craftsman who makes those tables has several prototype cutting tables that we are selling for him.  They are very similar to the tables we have been using, but there are some bumps and bruises and unfinished wood.  But, the only cost $99!  They are a great height for cutting and the tabletop fits a cutting board easily.  I even assembled one yesterday, just to prove that I could.  It comes unassembled, but you only need the little wrench and bolts that are supplied.  If you've ever gone down the IKEA assembly rabbit hole, this will seem like a cinch!

Remember, our store hours have changed so we are not open evenings.  With these dark days, it's a good time to cocoon at home!  And, we are closed for 3 days (24-25-26) for Christmas.
Another important date to remember:  December 15 is the last day that we will accept sewing machines for service and repair.  That is also the final day that we will continue to hold any special requests, so if you haven't picked up your item(s) by then it will be placed in the store for purchase.  We still do not have a final closing date for Bear Patch, it will be sometime in January.  That's all I know for now!
Watch for future emails and follow us on Facebook for updates!

No Tricks, All Treats!

Hello!  We have a big holiday coming up!  Are you ready for some treats?!
There are enough tricky things in our lives, so we are all about the treats!
Our Going-Out-of-Business Sale continues!  Yes, there are still thousands of yards of fabric for you!  You have been keeping us very busy, and we are still unpacking new fabric.  We want to keep the supply fresh!
The #1 question we are asked is "What is your last day of business?".
We don't really have that date set, but we will know when the time is right!
The #2 question we are asked is "Isn't someone buying the shop?".
All that we can really tell you is that there have been some talks with interested people, and it's not a quick process.  If there is any news that we can share,
we will definitely communicate that to you.

Now, for the treats!  Starting Wednesday, October 31, our storewide discount moves to 20%, and we are done with all those exceptions to the discount!  The only thing still sacred are the Bernina prices and services. We will honor the 20% discount on Bernina feet and accessories, Isacord, OESD stabilizer, Embroidery Design CD’s and patterns.

Starting the 31st, the minimum cut on all fabric is 1/2 yard, and we are not cutting fat quarters.
We are no longer taking special requests unless the item is something that we consider our regular stock items.
Don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions.

We do still have some classes going on and Open Sewing on our calendar.
Come join us for a day!

Finally, we again want to say how much we appreciate all of our customers!
You are the best!  It's a bit of an emotional roller coaster to be working
at Bear Patch right now, and we try to put that aside
so we can focus on you, our friends.
Please understand that we all are going through a big transition,
and we will do our best to make your shopping experience a good one.
Look for the beauty in every day!
Your friends at Bear Patch

Our Quilted Inspirations!

We recently enjoyed the pleasure of hosting Nina McVeigh, a Bernina Educator, for 2 classes in the store.  We were so please and gratified to have a full house for her presentations!  We all enjoyed and learned from her topic, "Quilted Inspiration".

Nina travels the country for Bernina as an sewing expert and teacher.  She shared her own experience of a trip to the Bernina headquarters in Switzerland, and the inspired quilts that came to be.  It was eye-opening to see the pictures of places and things on that trip which she turned into quilt designs.

Along the journey, she highlighted many special features and functions of the Bernina machines that helped make those quilts a reality.  She demonstrated several products that helped create the quilts and projects she displayed.  A very talented woman!

What a great group of customers!  All enjoying Nina's story!

And, of course, there were refreshments and treats for everyone!
The event wouldn't be complete without that!

Thank you, Nina, and we hope to see you again in the shop!

Lunch Box Quilts Trunk Show

If you are familiar with Lunch Box Quilts, you might already have used one of their designs for machine embroidery and applique.  If not, we have a special treat for you!

Lunch Box Quilts has loaned us large collection of their samples, and we have them on display during April.  We have already been re-ordering some of the design CD's, they are just that popular!  Some of our talented Bernina employees have already used these designs for samples displayed in the Sew Center.  But this trunk show is wonderful because there are a lot of designs that we just don't have time to complete.  And seeing these stitched out and sewn into quilts and wallhangings gives such a better idea of the quality of the design composition.

Many of the pictures in our slide show are small sections of a much larger quilt, illustrating how you can pick and choose which portions of a design you want to use and tailor it to the size you need.  We hope you enjoy this little glimpse of the Lunch Box Quilts.  If you want to see more complete pictures of the designs, plus many more that we don't have in this slide show, please visit Lunch Box Quilts website.  We can order any of the designs that you might want to request.  These embroidery design files are in all of the usual formats for many brands of machines.  Don't have an embroidery machine?  We can help you with that!  We are ready to demonstrate the functions of the Bernina embroidery machines whenever you visit the store.  Plus we have quite a few classes and the supplies that will help you on the way to success with machine embroidery.

Favorite Things 2

Linda P. is in LOVE with her #53 Edgestitch foot for Bernina!

In fact, we sometimes call her "53" to distinguish her from
 Linda E.!

Linda works in the Bernina sewing center and teaches classes, too.  She is an excellent resource for just about anything, and if she doesn't know the answer, she knows ways to find it!

Here's what she has to say about the #53 foot:

Bernina Foot #53 is a unique and versatile foot for straight stitching and one of my favorites!  It is Teflon coated so the foot moves easily over leather, vinyl or other "sticky" materials as well as being invaluable for sewing wonderfully on all quilt and woven fabrics.

The left "toe" is 1/4" wide and the right toe is 1/8" wide.  By using the right toe as a guide, any topstitching becomes precise and accurate.  This is my Go-To foot for the final topstitching when inserting a zipper.  The 1/8" wide toe is perfect for using as a guide next to the fold as the toe is skinny enabling stitching to be closer to any edge.

I love this foot so much that I actually have 2 of them as I would go into an absolute panic if I were to lose one and not have an extra one available!

Thank you, Linda, for your enthusiastic testimonial!  If you click on the link in the first line above, you will go to the Bernina website information and video about this foot.

The (H)Appy Shopper

Yesterday I encountered a very smart shopper.  Let me tell you about why I think she was smart.

She is an avid quilter and collector of quilt-related things.  Like many of us, I, too, am a collector.  And collecting is all well and good until it crosses the line.  And just what is that line?  To me, when I purchase duplicates of patterns, books, notions, fabric, that is where I cross the line between sensible collecting and wayward shopping.

I need to make the best use of my hard-earned money.  I can't just fritter away the family fortune on unnecessary purchases.  And you all know that books, patterns and fabric are generally not returnable, right?   The book and pattern returns relate to copyright law and the abundance of copy machines.  The fabric issue relates to the complication of cuts of fabric that become unusable, either because of size, laundering, pets, etc.

Anyway, the whole memory thing of what we already have at home does not become easier with time.  Know what I mean?  Oh wait, what was I talking about?  And if I could just remember the title of that book it would be so much easier, or the author, or even what it's about!

So, our friendly customer was facing this question while looking at some of the samples that are on display.  She had a couple patterns selected, but before purchasing, she consulted her phone.  Turns out she already had one of those patterns at home.  She was using an app called Craft Cabinet.  And she said it is a very valuable tool for her, with hobbies of quilting, knitting and scrapbooking.  This app costs a small drop in the bucket ($.99) and additional storage space can be purchased for $1.99.  I haven't used it myself, so I am only bringing this to your attention on the word of a fellow quilter, and there is no affiliation with the app developers.

You can set up drawers for all kinds of categories of items.  You can store a picture of the items, which is so convenient for quick recognition.  You can add notes about those items.  See the hibiscus rubber stamp below?  You know the size, where to find it in your home, even what ink colors work best and the size of the ink pad!  If you were doing this with fabric, you could note where and when it was purchased, cost, initial yardage, manufacturer, designer, what project it was used in, etc.

If you are a knitter, think how great this would be to have a category for needle styles, sizes, lengths, etc.  Sometimes it gets spendy to double up on needles that you already purchased.  Another item that usually can't be returned.  Same thing goes for any of your crafty passions.  Now, when you see needles on sale, you can look very cool by popping out your phone and checking your inventory!

You can search by any word in the title, or name of designer, etc.  Now, this does take some interaction on your own part to set this up and keep it updated.  Maybe you could hire an organizer to come to your home and log in your stuff!  I'm still waiting for the app that will let me place my phone on the bookshelf and it will identify everything on that shelf!

Bernina has a great app, too, for keeping track of your Bernina accessories.  It even links to videos showing how those mysterious thing-a-ma-jigs work!  This app is entirely free.  And we have employees who use it and that can tell you more or answer questions you might have.

It is full of useful information!  And look at that Wish List category!  Just keep your list going, and send it over to someone who loves you!  You know, Mother's Day is fast approaching!  Maybe this year you will use your Wish List on the app, and get something really useful!

There might be other apps out there for other machine brands, but when I did a search I couldn't find them.  Guess that means we all need Bernina machines so we can use the app!  Or just get the app, put the machine model that you want on your wish list, and send it over to that special person who wants to shop for you!  Now that makes a (H)Appy Shopper!

The Big Book of Feet

Let's talk feet.
Lots of feet.
Have you ever heard the phrase "Use the right tool for the job"?
In our world, that means "the right foot for the job"!

This book is like the encyclopedia of Bernina feet.
Individuals of a certain age still understand what encyclopedias are good for!
Besides stacking them up for a booster seat, that is!

If you are looking for an excellent reference tool chock full of information about feet, their uses, attachments and tips for getting the most out of your sewing arsenal, then this is the book for you!

It is loaded with color pictures to help you make sense of what's going on with those odd looking but precious attachments for your Bernina!  The Sew Center has books on hand, and you can ask any of our staff about the book because we were all gifted one for Christmas.  It's just that good!

The book is $99.99 and worth every penny!
Call 651-429-6500 to purchase your own copy.
Make it #1 on your wish list for birthday,
Mother's Day and Christmas in 2016!

Begging For Your Help

First of all, I am going to do something that is entirely self-serving--
I really, really, really would like a bit more of this fabric!

I used up all that I had when I was cutting these diamond shapes.  Unfortunately, I forgot that when I cut them on 2 thicknesses with wrong sides together, half of the diamonds have lines running a different direction.  So instead of having just enough, I am now short.  I don't know for sure where I bought it, nor who made it, but if it looks familiar to someone out there, please leave a comment.
I don't need much!

Now, on to the real business here--- another sewing room visit!
My co-worker, Eileen, has shared these pictures.  Eileen has a good sense of humor!

The entrance to her "studio" explains what many of us feel!

Now, as you look at next 3 pictures, aren't you amazed by how Eileen was able to hang from the ceiling and get these shots?  Well, the truth is, Eileen's daughter made this little doll-house size sewing room!  Notice the papers all over the little tiny bulletin board in the 3rd picture.

Now look at the real life bulletin board!  I would say that the teeny tiny room is a pretty good depiction!

Thanks for sharing, Eileen!  And that lovely new Bernina looks great in there!

And now for 4 more blocks of our City Sampler selection by Kristina--
Blocks 32-35

Wondering how she decides what colors to use?
She started out with this pile of bolts--

And from there, the rest is history!

City Sampler Blocks 9, 10, 11, 12

Blocks 9, 10, 11, 12

We are still viewing blocks from Chapter One from the City Sampler book by Tula Pink.  The theme of crosses can be interpreted so many ways, and Tula Pink's blocks show a good variety.  Little crosses, big crosses, skinny crosses, fat crosses--there must be something for everyone!

Our sewist, Kristina, is going to give us a behind-the-scenes look at her own Room of Creativity!  She shows her tidy scrap storage, her not-so-tidy scrap storage, and a look at her beloved Bernina.
This is where the magic happens!  Thanks for the pictures!
I love to see other people's sewing rooms,
I guess I am a sewing room peeper, but harmless.

Kristina's blocks are composed of an awesome variety of fabrics, gleaned from her own projects and donations from others.
She even makes entire quilts, as well as smaller items,
from her scrap stash.

Stay tuned for more City Sampler blocks soon.
And now I'm thinking of asking other people to share pictures of their sewing rooms, too.

She Caught The Bug (not the flu bug)

Sue N. gave a go at machine embroidery today in the Color Block Pouches class.
She used one of the store machines and made good use of coaching by Linda and Jeanne. Success! This might be the start of something wonderful!  Interested in trying some machine embroidery?  Give the Bernina ladies a buzz at 651-429-6500

Lots o' Stars

Yesterday I snuck in some time to try to catch up on the Feathered Star blocks for the machine embroidery class I am taking. Anne and Laurel have been guiding us along all year on this Hpopsisters design. And for a newbie like me this has been perfect to keep me on the learning track for machine embroidery. If you are learning or re-learning this craft, signing up for a series of classes is just the ticket. The repetition over the first few months really made me feel comfortable with my machine. So much so that I branched off on a couple of additional Christmas projects. I don't have pictures of those to share today but I will soon, promise.

A Night of Basket Lattice

We have been working on piecing together some rows for our Basket Lattice class, and here are 2 of the results.  What great use of color!  We also have had quite a discussion about pressing--to press or not to press, that is the question.  I tend to press only as much as is needed during the block assembly, preferably not much.  Then when the block is done I give it a good press.  I feel that I get better matching of seams and points when I do it this way because the fabric seems to have more "give".  Most quilters do much more pressing of each step along the way, and if that works for you then all is good in the world.  But maybe you might want to take a walk on the wild side with me and see what happens!

Tips From Some Pros

Although we do focus on quilting at Bear Patch, we also are lovers of most kinds of fiber and fabric.  This includes a random garment here and there.  I guess I started out on doll clothes and my own clothes, making plenty of both before I ever even had a notion to make a quilt.  So when I saw this list of tips for improving the process of garment sewing, I knew I needed to check it out.

I learned about this through the Bernina USA Facebook posting, so if you aren't already a "Facebook Friend" you should consider doing that.  There just might be more good things there to help you with all kinds of sewing.

The Elasticator!

I have to admit that I get a bit of a thrill when I can make good use of some little tool or tip that is like a new discovery to me. This time it is the Elasticator! As close to a super hero as it gets up in my sewing room!

Does this sound familiar to any of you? You see a good idea for something you would like to make but it involves not only buying a new foot for your machine but also finding out if you can really make it work like the 'experts' make it work. We all know those feet don't come on the cheap, and some see destined to have no good purpose other than part of your oh-so-impressive display of unused sewing machine accessories? When you are considering the purchase, you are waffling back and forth in your head about whether this is really worth spending money on, just how important is this little hunk of metal, how much time do I really think I have to learn another sewing machine trick, etc., etc. I really had it kind of lucky with this particular foot, because it came with my Bernina 1100DA serger when I bought it about 10 years (or so) ago. That machine is no longer manufactured, but is pretty similar to this current model. I'm sure it was explained to me when I had my new owner's class but something about the elasticator didn't stick. Not too long ago, I thought I might try to figure out how to use it, but that led to a problem because I broke something on the machine when I tried to remove the standard foot and put on the elasticator. So after that got repaired, I was hesitant to ever try to change the foot again! But I was motivated by becoming a first-time grandma, and I am putting all of my sewing skills on the line to feather the nest for this little grandson. That brings me to making fitted crib sheets to match the nursery, of course! Making a casing and threading elastic all the way around the sheet(s) was something I was not real keen on, and this was the way I found to get around that.

I started out looking at a few patterns/directions/tutorials and gleaning the basics for my own ideal crib sheet using my serger and elasticator. One good resource is here. I bought 2 yards of fabric for each sheet and 3.25 yds of 1/4" elastic.

I have added my own ideas and here goes--

I used the standard mattress size to guide me (27" x 52" x 5 1/2") and adjusted the size of my starting rectangle of fabric according to the width of the fabric after it was washed and selvedge trimmed. For example, one piece was only 40 1/2" wide and the other was 42" wide. That measurement has to be the maximum size of the width of the sheet.

I am not allowing any fabric for the folded elastic casing nor french seams, so my numbers are a little different than the usual pattern directions. So if I add 27 + 5.5 + 5.5=38 and subtract that from 42, I know that there is going to be only 2" on each tuckunder side. Then to figure out the long measurement for the rectangle, I added 52 + 5.5 + 5.5 + 2 + 2 = 67". My rectangle is 42" x 67". I need to cut squares out of each corner, and in this case the square needs to be the height of the mattress (5.5") + the tuckunder allowance (2") minus 1/4" for seam allowance = 7.25".
Clear as mud?

This demonstrates that the square will be cut from each of the 4 corners of the rectangle of fabric. You can fold the rectangle in half twice, aligning the corners, and cut all 4 at once.

Next, place the right sides of the fabric together with the corner edges aligned to make a 'box corner'.

Serge a seam down 3 (not all 4) of the corners.
Then change to the elasticator foot, following the appropriate directions. Before you do anything on your sheet, do some practice runs with scraps. You will have to waste some elastic to do this, but that can't be helped. Play around with the adjustment screw to make the stretch more or less, according to what you like. I found that my best setting was kind of middle of the road, about halfway between all the way tight and all the way loose.

Start at the "open" corner, the one you did not sew shut in the previous step.

I found that if I ran the fabric edge even with the right side of the foot, it was positioned to trim just a bit as the elastic was attached and the edge was cut and serged.

Keep going all the way around the 4 edges, right across those corner seams when you come to them.
When you get back to the unsewn corner cut the elastic and threads and change back to the regular serger foot.

Lay the right sides together and serge up that last corner seam.

This is what the elasticized serged edge looks like on the right side--

I use this handy double-eyed needle to thread the long thread tails back through some of the stitches to secure it

and add a dab of Fray Check to hopefully prevent any loose thread ends.

Just a little dab 'l do ya'. Does that phrase ring a bell with you? If so, I know you just as mature as I am!
Voila! Fitted crib sheet!

Now all I need is that grandbaby!
